Luke - per your request, I have just installed the Jaunty Beta. I have the Realtek alc888 and I am confirming that the volume is still unacceptably low. I am running 64-bit.

I am a relative newbie, so if there is something that you would like me to try to fix the problem, then please provide very specific instructions.
