I'm suspicious at this point if it's an issue with Samba. We see this issue with both rsync/cp which is strange, but the similar component in all of these tests are samba. Try changing your $target in the script to something on local disk and see if you encounter the same problem. If not, then I'd like to start digging into Samba and see if anything like this is noticed.
