for other people's convenience i am quoting the solution by Extaliones again.

"even quicker workaround:
sudo cp /lib/modules/2.6.24-11-generic/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko /lib/modules/2.6.24-12-generic/kernel/sound/
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel (or whatever you need)

and sound works again :) "
