Yes my concern about VGA is the same if it's still VGA at either end.
I don't know if EDID retrieval is meant to work on analog VGA connections, but in recent years there has been a slow trickle of bug reports about this.
I think either:
(a) Windows has a "driver" (.inf file) for the monitor already that defines the graphics modes for the monitor without the OS having to auto-detect it; or
(b) The Linux kernel is not as good at auto-detecting over analog VGA as Windows is.
