Just a bit more info: when it's working fine, the /proc/interrupts shows a lot of activities against it (IRQ 12 against i8042), but when it stops working, the counter remains zero.

A shutdown (which powers the laptop down) using either power button or shutdown command (either from within Linux or Windows OS) leads to broken touchpad on Linux. Then booting Windows OS becomes necessary to 'fix' the touchpad for later Linux usage. Although inelegant, this ugly work-around does work every time.
