Another interesting match between the original reporter's dmesg and mine is that the wireless comes up as wmaster0, is renamed to eth1 (per the udev rules), and *then* again renamed to wlan0_rename.

This one really sounds like udev.

For the record, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1721.
