I have now tried the RC4 kernel from
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.13-rc4/amd64/
and sorry, but the freeze is still there.

Only now I notice that, curiously, the freeze may (is more likely to?)
occur while the network is essentially idle.
