Bug Description

OS: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
Kernel: Linux 5.4.0-66-generic (X86_64)
Version: #74-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 27 22:54:38 UTC 2021

Resolution : 3840x2160 pixels
Vendor : The X.Org Foundation
Version : 1.20.9
Current Display Name : :0
-Monitors-
Monitor 0 : 3840x2160 pixels

Renderer : Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)
Version : 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 20.2.6
Direct Rendering : Yes

-Memory-
MemTotal Total Memory 16143780 KiB
MemFree Free Memory 4441688 KiB

After installing the latest Ubuntu kernel update, the screen of my HP Spectre laptop began flickering into distorted illegibility at frequent -- but unpredictable -- intervals. The machine is unusable when this occurs. Additionally, GIMP has begun crashing unpredictably.

I have rebooted many times. I have changed the display drivers (currently using the X.org driver). None of this has affected the problem.

I have searched online for possible fixes, and found nothing useful. HP's "support" is useless, since they only deal with Windows. StackExchange referred me to this site.

I hope I have reported correctly. Thank you.

Friday, Feb. 26, 2021 Followup.

Yesterday, 2/25/2021, my machine was free of errors. I had no illusions that my screen problem had miraculously gone away, and I was right. This morning, 2/26/2021, I found the following errors:

1: My scheduled nightly backup (to an external USB disk) had not happened.

2: The screen-scrambling problem returned.

3: The machine did not blank its screen after 15 minutes, as it is configured to do.

4: Although my temperature monitor did not report anything unusual, the machine was running noticeably warmer than usual.

5: The Bluetooth drivers were not loading, leaving my Bluetooth mouse unusable.

6: The screen breaks up and becomes unusable at approximately 20-second intervals. (I am typing this during the moments of usability).

I had to reboot and/or pause the machine in order to suppress the video problem to the extent that I am able to file this comment. Several times it went into Pause mode spontaneously. The periods of screen unusability are becoming longer.

Please advise me when any further developments appear.

Friday, Feb. 26, 2021 Followup:

As an experiment, I turned off my Logitech bluetooth mouse and connected an old Logitech USB mouse. It made no difference.

I took things a step further, and connected an external display to the machine (a Dell 19" flatscreen monitor). No flickering; the external display is normal. The problem appears to be in the driver for the built-in monitor.

I shold also note that when the machine is in the BIOS, there is no display problem, which, I believe, rules out a video-card failure.

Okay, I understand that I need to change the bug status to "Confirmed." But I'm still not clear how. The problem appeared after I installed the latest kernel upgrade, not a specific package.

Sorry if I'm being particularly obtuse about this, but I'm still not entirely sure how to give you the information you need.
