No, I haven't. The workaround of setting i8042.nopnp is satisfactory for me, and the patch creator has done a thorough write up of the problem.
My objective in filing this bug is to raise awareness that the current version of Ubuntu has this problem - on fairly major hardware from a mainstream vendor - so that other people searching the bug tracker for it can more easily find out.
Or, that it might draw the attention of Ubuntu kernel maintainers for possible inclusion as a SAUCE patch whilst waiting for upstream inclusion.
Or, getting a bit hopeful here, that someone at Canonical could get someone at HP to fix their "quirky" i8042 emulation.
