In my laptop the 'headset' mode makes the headset totally unavailable, both the speaker and mic. The 'headphone' mode is okay with headset speaker and laptop internal mic.

And I do think that there should be the same POPUP-DIALOG for user to choose in KDE and Xfce4 environment. It's inconvenient without it if 'headset' mode is actually unusable for user. Without it the user have to dig-in deep to PulseAudio Panel and find out the key setting of 'internal mic'.
