I have exactly the same problem on Kubuntu Gusty. I also have an Optiarc AD-5200A. Audio CD's are recognised as Blank CD-R when inserted into the drive. Audio applications, e.g. Kaffiene, are incapable of playing the CD directly, although they are capable of ripping the tracks to MP3/OGG etc.
