If nothing gets added to the output when the flickering happens then that answers my question, thanks.
This still feels like a kernel bug if not a hardware problem.
Do you notice any change if you wiggle the laptop screen? Try moving it forward and backward. We next need to check if it's related to a loose connection either in the screen or relating to the screen hinge.
