Hardy Alpha Shutdown Doesn't

Bug Description

CD Live, Hardy shutdown doesn't. It hangs just after the enter to remove CD message. No action on the keyboard or mouse elicits any response. A hardware reset is required, just hoping that the system is really stopped and no hard drive code will be damaged.

Leann Ogasawara requested on Gutsy bug #119308 that I test Hardy for a similar problem.
This is from the latest Hardy CD LiveI could find, daily build 20080109, which should be Alpha 1 plus. Alpha 2 is apparently not ready yet even though it is the scheduled day - likely they're working on some bugs.

This system shuts down fine with Dapper and Edgy, however in mid February Feisty didn't shut down (about the same time a bunch of code was put in from Debian).

Attached will be dmidecode which gives a summary of the Bios and motherboard, uname -a, /proc/version_signature, dmesg, and lspci -vvnn.

Do note that bug #119308 has a workaround for installed systems. I'll try it when Alpha 2 is out.

Let me know if I can provide anything else, or test anything.

Jerry, thanks for testing and the debugging information. For future reference, you actually don't have to open a new bug report, you can just open a new task against the existing report. Just click on the "Also affects distribution" link in the 'Actions' area on the left. I know it's not very intuitive :/

I'm curious if you can try one other thing:

1) From the LiveCD hit Ctrl-Alt-F1.
2) Issue the shutdown command: sudo shutdown -h now
3) Hit Alt-F1
4) Do you see any error messages or oddities? If so, can you maybe take a ditigal photograph of your screen and attach it to this bug report?

Thanks.

Tried several things, looked through some logs (not that I know what I'm looking for), and didn't see anything I thought was useful.

Attached is a digital photo of shutdown failure with Hardy 20080201. The few characters of ^M^M^?^?^? were when I was trying to switch back and forth between the command line and the splash screen. As usual with Ubuntu a lot of messages go by. I didn't find any log anywhere with the messages; is there one, since the same failure on installed system does leave lots of logs around.

By the way, the fix that works on Feisty & Gutsy from bug #119308 does NOT work on Hardy so things are even worse.

On attempting to shutdown, I can see the keyboard lights flicker when the keyboard is reset, however the computer doesn't show any signs of powering off.

Hi, I haven't tried this on Hardy, but since this is the root for this bug report, I'll post my findings here. I have tested all suggestions posted here as well as under #119308 and none of them worked for me.

The PC config:
Dell Optiplex 745
Dual Core Intel 2.13 GHz
2GB RAM
Wired network
no X-win
OS: Ubuntu 7.10 server (using alternate install)
upgraded to latest patch level

uname -a
Linux wzur4307117 2.6.22-14-server #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 08:27:05 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I'm getting the same thing. My system hung at the end of installation with Hardy beta right after the CD was ejected and it displayed the "Hit Enter to continue" message. Hitting enter did nothing.

Now, it hangs on reboot or shutdown every time. It hangs after the shutdown progress bar goes completely dark and just sits there.

System:

Dell Optiplex 745
Core 2 Duo

I have a Gutsy installation on the same machine that does not suffer the same problem.

Hardy Release Candidate still has the same problem. The system does shut down power off fine with Dapper and Edgy, and early Feisty until some code was pushed in from Debian. The system as detailed in the notes above still does not shut down down power off. There is Ubuntu code in Edgy and Feisty to do it, however I presume the developers have no interest in using it.

It is a shame this bug has not been given a higher priority. If I were
a new user, just trying out Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows, an
annoying bug like this would keep me from wanting to learn much about
Linux. The conclusion might be "If they can't even make the machine
turn off when it should, then this must be a pretty poor OS." Of
course, we know that is not true, but try telling that to a newbie.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
