Xenial:

$ grep AOUT !$
grep AOUT /boot/config-4.4.0-149-generic
# CONFIG_HAVE_AOUT is not set
# CONFIG_IA32_AOUT is not set

Bionic:

$ grep AOUT /boot/config-4.15.0-51-generic
# CONFIG_HAVE_AOUT is not set
# CONFIG_IA32_AOUT is not set

Sorry to say I don't have an a.out file to test with.
