There was indeed a regression introduced by the backport of the mainline commit c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b, as reported on bug 1813873.
That fix is already available on 18.04 Bionic kernel 4.15.0-46, could you please test this version and check if your issue is fixed?
For Xenial 16.04, the fix was also applied on kernel 4.4.0-143 but the package is still in -proposed. The scheduled date for releasing this kernel on -updates is next Monday, Mar 18th. If you would like to test if this kernel fixes the issue, you can enable -proposed (please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed) and update your linux meta package (e.g. linux-generic).
