No change with kernel 4.19.0-041900rc5-generic, alas.

The bizarre thing is the Xorg log (~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log) saying

 [ 11.016] (II) modeset(0): Supported established timings:

and subsequently the finest mode being 1280x1024@75Hz. Then, in the section(s) called

 [ 11.017] (II) modeset(0): Supported detailed timing:

it does include a mode with "clock: 241.5 MHz" and 2560x1440. It also says later:

 [ 11.017] (--) modeset(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 250000KHz

so it is happy up to 250MHz. And much later, it says

[ 11.906] (II) modeset(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:
 [ 11.906] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "2560x1440"x0.0 241.50 2560 2608 2640 2720 1440 1443 1448 1481 +hsync -vsync (88.8 kHz eP)

and so on, i.e., including a 2560x1440 mode.

I do not understand that parts are happily talking about the maximum resolution of the monitor via HDMI, and other parts seem to not know anything about it.

Any help welcome. Would you like me to try the intel driver (again)?
