I tested with the latest kernel of branch 4.4 available on kernel.org which is 4.4.52.

I see the exact same behavior. The cifs module is the same version as the one shipped with Xenial's kernel. Therefore I am setting the tag kernel-bug-exists-upstream as you suggested.
