I would not be supprised (but this is a pure guess) that one commit of the kernel changed some setting in the hardware/chipset which causes this strange delay and may need to be 'fixed back'. Reason I recon this, is even an older live disk, thus with an older kernel, still shows this problem.

Or the hardware in that gen macbook is simply bad.
