Bug Description

I recently purchased a Sager NP8152-S / Clevo 650RP6 on which I am dual booting.
See http://www.clevo.com/clevo_prodetail.asp?id=958&lang=en

The trackpad is not detected. xinput does not display a trackpad device nor is the device listed in cat /proc/bus/input/devices which is uploaded as a file entitled devices.

The trackpad device is a Synaptics SMBus TouchPad.

Please let me know if I incorrectly reported this bug as it is my first for Ubuntu. I followed the instructions listed on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection in the section called "In case your Touchpad doesn't work at all (No response from the Touchpad)".

Thank you!

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

This issue is occurring after a brand new installation using latest 16.04.1 iso image on a new computer. When booting into a USB live testing/installation, the touchpad works and is detected using xinput command. However, after installation, the touchpad is no longer detected. Not sure if this info is useful but I partitioned the drive 650mb efi ; 20000mb EXT4 / ; 33000mb swap end of space; remainder (256gb) /home. I am dual booting with Windows 10 and Ubuntu on separate SSDs as UEFI and with secure boot disabled.

After installing upstream kernel 4.9.0-040900 the problem is still persisting.

Installed Linux Kernel 4.9 using following instructions:
http://www.yourownlinux.com/2016/12/how-to-install-linux-kernel-4-9-0-in-linux.html

Output of uname -a:
Linux P65xRP 4.9.0-040900-generic #201612111631 SMP Sun Dec 11 21:33:00 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x84_64 GNU/Linux

Additionally, wifi no longer working in Linux Kernel 4.9, however, network card is detected.

Output of lspci | fgrep Network:
6e:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8260 (rev 3a)

I will tag this bug with 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Please let me know if there is more I can do.

I had tried upgrading to 16.10 using the automated upgrade to see if I could fix the problem. This is the version for which I reported the bug. I've since tried reinstalling with 16.04.1 and attempted the upstream kernel fix that you recommended.

Sorry for my inconsistencies.

I was having the same problem, I think, with a very new schenker h507 (p651rp6, essentially your same laptop) using arch linux. It got fixed magically by enabling arch "testing" repository, which contains very recent versions of linux-firmware, libinput (I'm not using synaptics) and others. Now my touchpad (and everything else) works. Sorry for not being more specific as of which package update fixed it - I'm moving forward now from this. In any case, this means that the problem is already fixed and the solution will eventually make it to the main distros. If you cannot wait, you could give arch (with the testing repo enabled) a try (using antergos to install makes it a breeze). Let me know if you need more help.

Same issue also appears in Linux Mint 18.1 Mate. In all instances, the touchpad works in the live USB boot before installation but after installation, its as though it is not even installed.

@santi Thank you for letting me know. It's definitely frustrating as its an essential piece of the usability of the computer!!

Are the upstream kernels shared between Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Arch Linux?

I guess each distro uses its own pace to include updates.

I was too quick to declare victory. In many cases, my touchpad did not work after rebooting. That it was working or not seemed quite random. A similar bug is reported in [1]. After using the workaround of adding "i8042.reset" to the kernel parameters [2], now my touchpad seems to work 100% of the time (but will post if it fails again).

So to summarize, for getting my touchpad to work on arch linux, I needed both to upgrade linux-firmware, libinput and xorg to their testing versions (I suspect the latter are the real culprits) and then add the "i8042.reset" flag to the kernel parameters. None of those two actions would give me a 100% working touchpad on its own, but that could just be bugs of the package versions currently in arch, so your mileage might vary. I hope the "i8042.reset" workaround makes it for you.

santi, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:
