For those of you using gnome's volume control to control the Master/PCM sliders, you should either manually untick the (un)mute icon at the bottom of each slider, or file a bug against the gnome-media source package.
Additionally, there are quite a few amixer outputs above that show that both Master and PCM are _not_ muted. This is intentional. Muting PCM does not automatically imply that _all_ output should be muted.
