My problem with iwl3945, (no wifi and no report of firmware load, comments #19 and on) seems to have been resolved. I don't know what caused it initially, but after removing *all* apparently-broadcom-related packages wifi works on two hp6710b laptops running fully updated xenial with the HWE stack.
