You must run 'fakeroot debian/rules clean' in order to prepare the kernel tree, before running 'editconfigs' or doing any other operation involving debian/rules. For more details, see the documentation here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel#Modifying_the_configuration
