Johnnel, could you please provide the full computer model as noted on the sticker of the computer itself (not from the Bug Description)?

Johnnel, in order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

I tested the kernel v4.7-rc2. I am marking this as unfixed. I failed to provide information that the wifi does connect sometimes. I do not know what triggers that it will connect. For example, when I boot-up and login it will not connect whatever you do. But one out of five attempts, when I log-out and log back in. Then I would enter sudo lshw -c network in terminal. Then it connects. It takes several minutes for it to connect on those rare occasions. When I disconnect wifi and connect back it has trouble again connecting.

The normal behavior for this is it should connect when you trigger it to connect and should work as any other laptop should.

I did an apt-get upgrade today, and it seems it fixed the wifi issues. Amazing! Still using kernel v4.7-rc2. I am changing the tags for the kernel bug.

Johnnel, to clarify:
1) What was updated precisely?
2) If you boot into the default Ubuntu kernel (not mainline) is the issue still reproducible?

Christopher, an update on this, I was wrong again with the update, though the wifi was worked for a few minutes, it didn't worked when I turned the laptop off and back again. Sam issue as before, the kernel is the newest one.

Johnnel, when you say the kernel is the newest one, Ubuntu or upstream?

Hi Christopher, I am using the kernel from upstream. This bug seems to be related with DHCP. It seems having a hard time getting connection when set to DHCP. I gave the laptop a static IP address and it is able to connect to wifi every time. Won't be comfortable bringing this laptop anywhere though, it won't connect to DHCP.

Johnnel, to keep this relevant to upstream, could you please test the latest mainline kernel (4.7-rc4) and advise to the results?

Brian Carrozza (carrozza-bc) wrote : Re: Wifi cannot connect to router on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS - Ralink RT5390

I am having this problem with the wifi: connecting and disconnecting randomly, low speeds despite available bandwidth, and random low signal strength. This card (RT5390 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe) worked with a compiled driver (rt5390) in Ubuntu 14.04. The same compilation does not work for Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS

I have a HP pavilion g6-2016ss notebook with Ralink rt5390R. Same issue. Wifi slow downs and dropping connection with default configuration based on NetworkManager. The correct driver up and running and default kernel. I have deleted NetworkManager stuff and installed wicd. Working fine, no slow downs nor dropping connection. It seems to be NetworkManager related issue.

Hello, Everyone!

I have the same issue and after run the command bellow the wireless started working perfectly. But I don't know what the command did to the wireless work.

sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc network-manager-vpnc-gnome

But after the reboot, it hasn't worked anymore.

I tried to restart the network-manager but got no success.

Is there any other info on my computer that could help?

This is still broken. Lots of dropped packets, bandwidth is very low. Works perfectly when dual-booted into Win7, and was working in 14.04 prior to 16.04 install.

I have had this working by compiling another driver in 11.04, 12.04, 13.04, and 14.04

Again it's broken in 16.04, but now there's not away to compile a driver.
