I see the same bug on 16.04.3 LTS (xUbuntu):

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS"

without a crash in my logfile.

For /var/log/syslog.5.gz 385 times in one minute, for most of the other logfiles no entry, today 3 entries (all from the same minute).
