Re,
I just made a new install + dist-upgrade + differents grub options :
- I need to put "apci=off" for installation and booting, otherwise I can't go in my session (from apci=off, apci=ht, apci=noirq, pci=noacpi, pnpacpi=off, noapic, nolapic)
- I read somewhere with "i8042.noloop" would work, but it doesn't.
Thanks

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.6 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

It's a new fresh install, with dist-upgrade.

I just install 4.6 kernel (Linux MSI-I7 4.6.0-040600-generic #201605151930) and :
- I have no change
- if I remove "apci=off" from my grub options (so, I have no option), I can go to my session page with my touchpad enable ; after login, I have a black screen (I put my syslog and kern.log with 2 boots).

Hi,

Sorry to contact to you directly, but I don't understand very well your :

"If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'."

So, I add kernel-bug-exists-upstream to my post title : I hope it's ok.

Thnaks.

Hi,
With my differents tests of acpi grub options, I think the touchpad problem is just a result of a bad acpi management.

Hi,

You can find it in attachment.

I really think the problem is from ACPI (if I let standard boot options, I couldn't install and go to my session : I need to put "acpi=off" in boot options).

Re,

I make the same test with no boot option (without "acpi=off") and the result is very different (we can find touchpad, MSI buttons,...).

- with kernel 4.6, nothing change (see previously post) and I need "acpi=off" to go to my session
- with kernel 4.7-rc2, it's worst : the ubuntu load freezes on the logo (gnome-shell) and I can't go to login page (see my attachment). This appends with AND without "acpi=off" option.

So, to work, I need kernel 4.6 with "acpi=off" option.

Sam, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem following the instructions verbatim at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel to the appropriate mailing list (TO Rafael J. Wysocki and Len Brown CC linux-acpi)?

Please provide a direct URL to your post to the mailing list when it becomes available so that it may be tracked.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi,
I post this bug to bugzilla : https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119831

It could be great to change the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel to the right process.

Thanks

Sam, there is nothing to change, as it is as per upstream. Some (not all) developers request one to file a report depending on the issue. When they request that, they take ownership based on this event.

I'm using a MSI GT72-6QE, and my OS is Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS. My touchpad doesn NOT work as well. And I'm pretty sure I've already did "acpi=off".

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off intel_idle.max_cstate=0"

is enabled in my /etc/default/grub .

So, is there a standard solution for now?

Cheers

Hi,

I'm using the same MSI and I have the same problem. My touchpad doesn't work when the acpi=off is in the Grub but I can't boot without this parameter. Without that, my cpu is stuck!

More than 1 years after, is there a standard solution?

oscar (chillvamp), it will help immensely if you filed a new report to provide required debugging information via a terminal:

Sam, to keep this relevant to upstream, could you please test the latest mainline kernel (now 5.3)?

As new kernels are released upstream, please continue to test them. Otherwise, you risk developers not remaining focused on your problem.

If reproducible, with the latest mainline kernel, please provide an uncut, untarred, and uncompressed log of the failed boot (no WORKAROUNDs).

Hi,

I have HP Zbook 15 with NVidia+Intel graphics.
I have enabled NVidia to have better performance (discrete in bios).
This requires pnpacpi=off in grub, for Ubuntu to boot into graphic mode with nvidia drivers.

And I think this option also disables laptop touchpad and keyboard.
I don't see them in xinput.
Both of them work in BIOS and when you boot live image.

This all started with 18.04 and is the same in 19.04 and 19.10 with 5.3.0-19-generic

So, yes, this option is definitely a problem for laptops and nvidia drivers.

Any workarounds? Except using external USB keyboard and mouse...

Hi,

here is the solution!

remove pnp_acpi=off and add acpi_iso=Linux
Booted into graphic mode and keyboard and touchpad are working, after 2.5 years

BTW, I am using Ubuntu 19.10 which has nvidia drivers OOTB.

Here is my full grub config:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset intel_pstate=enable"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nogpumanager acpi_iso=Linux"

I will test, if I can remove nomodeset and nogpumanager from the list, since this were needed on 18.04 LTS...
