After disabling in my Dell screen MST support (DP 1.2 disabled), did a firmware upgrade from the following link https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/skylake-dmc-1.26 and applying the kernel images located in http://koti.kapsi.fi/~tjaalton/skl/mst ,now system works fine. I had no freezes and I was able to suspend / resume the system without issues.

Images used (linux-image-4.4.0-23-generic_4.4.0-23.40~bpo1_amd64.deb and linux-image-extra-4.4.0-23-generic_4.4.0-23.40~bpo1_amd64.deb)
