I'm working on the premise that everyone here is running Ubuntu as a VMWare guest (if that's not the case, please speak up).

Thanks David Poole and RP for confirming that the problem first appeared in the -ckt2 kernel. I'd like to have you try -ckt4 also (it contains additional vmware-graphics fixes):

We'll continue researching other possible solutions in parallel in case -ckt4 doesn't help.
