I have a ASUS ROG G552 and I added to following to my grub:

etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native idle=nomwait"

I am running Ubuntu Mate 16.04

Kernel 4.4.0-7-generic

The above command restored my touchpad and detected it with full hw support.
