Just to confirm, I suspect the move to Kernel 4.3 rc6 has got the 5 GHz scanning working. For some reason the device just doesn't want to connect to 5 GHz. Not sure if I can make the adapter connect to explicitly connect to 5 GHz as the network is advertised on both frequency bands.
