And here I am realizing I should have said more. Both versions performed identically, but I wrote a lot more about the 3.13 because I could compare the effects of installing it from the upstream source with the effects of installing it from the package manager. Whereas the most I could say about the other was, "I couldn't install the nvidia kernel module for it, and thus couldn't really test it properly."
