Just wanted to chip in, we experienced the same problem twice now on a 12.04 LTS Gen 1 VM. Unlike situation described in comment #38, we haven't installed any daemons for the guest OS. Last time it happened, we could definitely correlate it to the Avamar (VSS based) backup. At the time, we were running kernel 3.13.0-68-generic #111~precise1-
