15.04: Broadwell HD 5500: screen corruption after logout

On a 1366x768 Broadwell i3-5010U laptop (System76 Lemur lemu5), sometimes after I logout there is strange horizontal wrapping/scrolling corruption at the lightdm login screen plus a fixed vertical wrapping (see attached video).

After the first time that the screen goes wonky, I see this error in dmesg:

Logging back into to Unity seems to consistently fix the screen corruption after a few seconds.

This doesn't happen every time you logout, but probably happens 1/3 of the time or so. Occasionally I'll also see similar corruption during shutdown right around the time that X stops and Plymouth takes over.

Interestingly, on a Broadwell i3 desktop connected to a 1920x1080 external display via HDMI, I've never encountered this problem. So it might be related to the specific 1366x768 screen resolution or to the embedded display port (eDP).

I filed this bug against the kernel because of the dmesg error from the DRM module... but the problem could just as likely be in xserver-xorg-video-intel.

For what it's worth, I've tried the latest 4.0 mainline build from the kernel PPA as well as the 4.1rc1 mainline build, and this problem still exists with both. I've also tried the slightly updated X packages for 15.04 from the xorg-edgers PPA, and this problem is likewise still present.

I have this bug as well on my Lenovo X250 (also Broadwell HD 5500), and also on external display. I can see that there have been no activity for more than a month, so is the activity at another forum now?

I have this problem also on my Thinkpad T450s. The warping stopped at logout when using the xorg-edgers ppa; however, the virtual consoles still warp (ctrl alt F1-6). If I'm not using xorg-edgers, I have the same problem for both so...

@myramenisgone - so the xorg-edgers PPA fixes this for you on 15.04?

I haven't yet filed an upstream bug because I still haven't figured out whether this is a bug in the kernel vs. xserver-xorg-video-intel, etc.

But if the xorg-edgers PPA fixes this for you on 15.04, that's an extremely helpful hint.

So far my hunch has been that this bug is *not* in the kernel, as the latest 4.1rc* mainline builds don't fix it.

This behavior is now happening in new trusty installs. I downloaded the 14.04.3 (64 bit) ISO yesterday and installed it on the Lenovo x250. Upon shutting down, the corruption happens.

Perhaps the problem was just in the installer ISO. The video has been stable on the installed 14.04.

I have a lemu5 installed with Xubuntu 16.04. I have seen the same kind of screen wrapping when I try to use the modesetting driver in place of xserver-xorg-video-intel (as suggested by its description). It manifests itself somewhat randomly during normal use. I noticed it is particularly bad when you repeatedly mouse over a playing Youtube video (In either Firefox or Chromium).

Since my last comment, I have been trying the modesetting driver periodically and it seems that a fairly recent update has fixed the screen wrapping I was seeing on my Lemur. My operating system is still Xubuntu 16.04. I have been using the modesetting driver since last night and I have seen no further screen wrapping. Thank you devs.
