Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 15.04 and fn+f7 and fn+f8 use to lower and higher the brightness of the screen.
In slackware using kernel 3.14.33 those keys works and give output from acpi_listen.
In kernel 3.16 to 4.0 those keys don't work and acpi_listen outputs nothing.

I expected fn+f7 and fn+f8 to work

Testing ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso, the bug was not reproducible. I could lower and higher the brightness with fn keys.

Oh shit, was I suppose test the 14.04.0 iso? I'll do that to later.

Martin Bångens, if you tested 14.04.1 that's fine, as I was trying to find the most recent release where this was not reproducible. So, please disregard the 14.04.0 test.

Despite this, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 3.13 to 3.19 in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

Martin Bångens, you would want to switch to the mainline kernel and bisect from there.

I can do that but im using the same kernel 3.19. and have the same problem..
maybe I'll reinstall this computer fist don't know what I've done with it.
It's poorly or experimental configured so I'll think you get a better
report if this computer were more default configured.

My idea of the problem is that some acpi backligt driver is not
communicating with the hp_wmi driver.
the hp_wmi driver need to bee updated I think. there is a lot of other key
not working in the hp_wmi module and sometimes random output.

the time. So stop this bug report from sending me stupid emails, shut this
down already. Don't think you can even bay this pis of shit computer new
anyway. The cpu is shit plus its nvidia, there is no point.

I'm also getting this problem on my Compaq Presario CQ60. Fn+F7/Fn+F8 don't work to set brightness (though other Fn keycodes generally work), and in fact I can't seem to find anything to set any value of brightness at all, and the computer seems to be stuck on the setting of "blindingly bright." /sys/class/backlight is empty, and the Xorg log doesn't mention "video" or "light" at all (other than in reporting the "acpi_backlight" kernel setting I tried; it didn't work). I'm using Ubuntu MATE 16.04. I'm... not sure how to post my specs, so I'm attaching a HardInfo report in case it helps :) Let me know if you need any more information, I'd love to see this bug fixed! Cool I'm also using mate 16.04 ;D pity you don't have the /sys/class/backligt/acpi_video0(sure you don't have it? using standard ubuntu kernel?) I made tow scripts that can lower and higher the brightness but they depends on acpi_video0 directory. I'm learning to program in c end linux kernel programing to get that hp_wmi driver to read the key code or whatever rigt, and there is a problem with the blue-light wifi button. the get the wifi up going after that is a pain in the as. most reboot the computer and run:

[code/]run ip ip link set wlp7s0 up
rfkill unblock all[/code]
sometimes it works somtimes not just reboot and try again..

I like to get all the keys to function, and I'm gonna do it my self. wmi driver is old and not so functional except for the volume and play and paus still work with is grate, there are approximately 8 key that are not working or is kind of buggy working, like one key that worked sometimes but sometimes not
