Bug Description

On my new Acer Aspire E 13 ES1-311C03V i installed a dual boot with Ubuntu 14.04

The touchpad (labeled as PRECISION TOUCHPAD on the sticker on the computer) works fine on windows 8, but not in ubuntu (from the beginning). In windows everything works, but in Ubuntu it does not respond at all.

An external mouse does work fine, it is only the touchpad that does not work.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection#generalinfo instructs to attatch ~/dmesg, ~/devices, and /var/log/Xorg.0.lo but launchpad only allows one attatchement so i will combine them in an archive.

Any help/soludion/fix will be much appreciated, as i have been using ubuntu for years now on previous computers, and i would really regret it having to change back to windows because the touchpad is not working on my new laptop.

EDIT: after searching even more on the internet i found a work around for similar types of laptops: echo "blacklist i2c_hid" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Afterwards i rebooted but the touchpad still did not work, but when i shut down my computer later and restarted is a second time the touchpad started working! So i guess that is because of this work around.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

It is an Acer problem. Here is a fix that worked for me.

Reboot and hold F2. You'll be in BIOS.
Under Main, go to Touchpad.
It will be on Advanced. You should change it to Basic.
Save changes and exit.
Your touchpad should work.
