Bug Description

On 14.10, X has been causing me all kinds of problems. It seems to most often happen after the screenlock has been on. When coming back from being locked, sometimes the system is unresponsive, but I can cajole it back to life by repeatedly going to a VT-- once I see a login prompt, I can usually Ctrl+Alt+F7 and start using the computer again. I have seen it happen without the screen being locked too (yesterday I was typing into Google docs when it happened). Occasionally I see a core dump in /etc/X11/core. After getting the system to respond, X often is taking a fair bit of CPU as seen in top (30-80%) and it is unclear why and I normally need to reboot.

I've been looking out for kernel tracebacks and today found one:

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

FYI, after coming back to my computer this morning, X was not having trouble. I'd like to see my system in a bad state again on 14.10 before retrying another kernel, cause I may have a potential other clue as to the problem (but don't want to cloud the issue now).

Would running the current vivid distro kernel be helpful? I ask cause I can't run the vanilla kernel for long periods because I need the full apparmor v3 patchset.

Sure, running the Vivid kernel would be helpful. That will give use similar information as running the mainline kernel. We basically want to know if it is already fixed in newer kernels. If it is, the fix may already have made it to the stable kernels upstream, which we can test by trying the latest 3.16 upstream kernel.

The vivid kernel did not help. In fact, under normal operation there are many weird visual artifacts (eg, blocks of lines).
