Bug Description

My system started hanging after upgrading to 14.10. The screen freezes, all processes continue to execute, but I couldn't seem to interact with the computer. (For example, if I am in a skype call, I continue hearing the other side, they hear me too, but the screen freezes.)

I noticed that if I wait about 5 minutes after the hang, try to go to tty1, the system eventually wakes up. The following lines appear in dmesg after a wake up:

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I downloaded the v3.18-rc2-utopic kernel, but I am having trouble booting. It doesn't seem to recognize my / partition (possible UUID problem). Either way, I have also been having trouble reproducing the bug. This happens about once a week, and I find a reliable way to reproduce the bug. Do you have any ideas?

Because this bug renders the system unusable, it should have an importance of "critical"; as said in <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Bug%20importances>.
