Bug Description

On a system with a GeForce 6150SE integrated GPU, the system becomes mostly unresponsive shortly after logging in. It does not lock up completely, but seems to only process pointer events or keystrokes once every few seconds, and pings from another machine on the network start returning in 3-5 seconds instead of a few ms.

This began in raring and happens on every subsequent release (and also under precise, if a HWE stack from raring or later is installed); under quantal it does not happen.

Based on the hardware, symptoms, kernel versions, and NvMSI=0 workaround, these upstream bugs might (or might not) be related:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61321
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71382
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87361

WORKAROUND: Use kernel boot parameter:
nouveau.config=NvMSI=0

WORKAROUND: Use proprietary nvidia-304 driver.

Ryan Tandy, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.19-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi,

Thanks for the guidance.

My system does not boot properly with the 3.19-rc1 and 3.19-rc2 mainline kernels. Some upstart job is hanging. I will investigate that separately.

The bug exists in the 3.18.1 mainline kernel.

Hi,

The following commit:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6/patch/?id=4761703bd04bbdf56396d264903cc5a1fdcb3c01

fixes the bug for me. I tested it by rebuilding the current vivid kernel (3.16.0-28.38) with that patch added.

That commit is found in the linux-3.19 branch at http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6/log/?h=linux-3.19

It was linked from the upstream report: https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=87361#c7

I don't see it in any other trees (e.g. drm-next) yet.
