Thanks. I updated my bios using freedos (which was surprisingly easy to do!).
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

This does not fix the problem. If I restart my laptop without the workaround, the effect is still the same. When I change brightness, I see the slider changing, but the brightness stays the same.
