Also note that I followed the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend to manually suspend and trace the suspend-resume. But after suspend when I powered up to resume the laptop successfully resumed.

As I noted earlier, if I suspend the laptop manually via System menu, most of the time I can then successfully resume it. But if I close the lid and let the laptop suspend by configured action I can reproduce the issue consistently 100%.
