Right this can unfortunately happen both ways. One driver leaves or sets a device into a state the other cannot or accidentally does not handle well.
Yes, this is what it might look with MSI:
220: 0 0 PCI-MSI-edge eth0
And this without:
21: 0 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi eth0
(note I quickly grabbed those from 2 different system, which probably run different kernels, so it must not be exactly like that. ;-))
