Bug Description

Sometimes when I want to suspend my HP Elitebook 8560w to RAM by pressing "fn + f3" or by clicking on "Sleep" in the KDE menu, the computer starts the suspension process but it does not turn off. Instead, a black screen with white letters is shown (I removed the numbers in square brackets before each line):

PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
PM: Preparing system for mem sleep
Freezing user space processes ... (elapsed 0.001 seconds) done.
Freezing remaining freezable tasks ... (elapsed 0.001 seconds) done.
PM: Entering mem sleep
Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug)
_

The only thing on that the computer reacts is to press the power button for 3-5 seconds which turns the computer (completely) off so that it cannot resume but has to reboot. I have this computer since November 2011 and I had always the latest Kubuntu version installed. The bug never happened until and including Kubuntu 13.10. However, it occurs on average at every 5th to 10th suspend to RAM since I upgraded to Kubuntu 14.04.

I have attached /var/log/kern.log. This file shows, e.g., that I *successfully* suspended my computer on July 3, 00:30 and resumed it on July 3, 07:13 but that I *unsuccessfully * suspended my computer on July 3, 20:08 and rebooted it on July 3, 22:13.

Arne Henningsen, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.16-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Arne Henningsen, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect the kernel in order to identify the fix commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?
