Bug Description

As soon as I start Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS with i386 PAE kernel, 8GB memory, GNU/Linux 3.2.0-64-generic-pae i686,
cache memory area increases a little by a little, and It consumes at last, a few hours later, 5GB memory. User memory left will become 200MB.

I release cache memory by issuing a shell script, cache_release.sh. It is like that :

#!/bin/bash

/bin/sync
/bin/sync
/bin/sync
/bin/sync
/bin/sync

/sbin/sysctl -w vm.drop_caches=1
/sbin/sysctl -w vm.drop_caches=2
/sbin/sysctl -w vm.drop_caches=3

I registered this shell script to crontab and I issue this script command once a ten minutes.

Maybe kernel requires patches.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.16 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Tag : 'kernel-fixed-upstream'

Hi, Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury).

I tested with Ver. 3.16 kernel.

I test ran for fourty minutes.

To see with 'top' command, the kernel consumes as cache memory 700MB.

First it consumed 500MB and after thirty minutes, 700MB was consumed.
To release cache memory with 'cache_release.sh', cosumed cache memory became 100MB.
It seems to me, as for Ver. 3.16 kernel, cache memory management bug is already fixed.
