I have a Genius VideoCAM Messenger and I works flawlessly under Feisty, but doesn't work under Gutsy (Tribe 4) nor Hardy Beta.

I'll attach the output of some commands under both Feisty and Gutsy...

The webcam was recognized in one of the beta releases of Gutsy, but I didn't have enough time to let you know. It's however not recognized in the stable release. What can I do?

I don't know if this has something to do, but I've just installed camstream and now at least Kopete recognizes the webcam. Cheese doesn't recognizes it.

Still doesn't work in Hardy. Tested with Ekiga.

Thanks Jan,

Can you attach and updated dmesg output for Hardy.

Also, we'll keep this open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.22 this will be closed as it does not qualify for a stable release update - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks.

Leann, I'm now using Hardy and the webcam works with Kopete, but doesn't work with Cheese nor Ekiga.

My girlfriend is also using Hardy (but 64-bit) and the same webcam works with both Kopete and Cheese.

I just upgraded my laptop to Hardy, pluged the webcam nad voila... works! With Cheese and Skype.
Can someone else confirm this and set the bug to fixed?

Gutsavo, since you are the original bug reporter, care to confirm Jan's last comment using the final Hardy 8.04 release? Thanks.

Hello, Leann.

No, it's still not working with neither Ekiga nor Cheese, but does work with Kopete.

In Ekiga, I get this error message:
Failed to open the device
Error while opening /dev/.static/dev/video0.

Cheers.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I just tested it on Ubunut 8.10 beta in VirtualBox. dmesg recognized the camera, but either Ekiga or Skype doesn't work. Skype at least shows green noise.

And I found another thing: It depends in which front USB I plug it. It even gives different dmesg output. One shows the green noise in Skype, the other doesn't work at all.

If this helps, I have similar behavior. Ekiga shows the video, but EasyCam throws an error - "no camera found" and merely launching Cheese causes a complete freeze of gnome. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04. Gnome 2.22.3.
