Bug Description

When laptop is in standby and lid is opened, the screen remains black and the computer doesn't respond. LEDs and fans are active. The computer is usable again after a restart.

This bug was not present in previous installed Ubuntu 13.10.

Resuming from standby works in most cases with a standby hook which kills pulseaudio and unloads the module snd_hda_intel before standby and reloads snd_hda_intel after resume. See attached file. In some cases the computer doesn't go to standby when I close the lid with this standby hook active. When I reopen the lid, the display remains black and the computer doesn't respond. So this workarround is not reliable.

When I boot Ubuntu 14.04 with Saucy kernel 3.11.0-19-generic or mainline kernel 3.12.18-031218-generic for trusty, resume from standby works fine.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I tried mainline kernel 3.15.0-031500rc2-generic and 3.15.0-031500rc3-generic and I get a black screen after plymouth boot screen, the computer doesn't respond. So I was not able to test resuming from standby.

Carsten Wehmeier, the next step is to fully commit bisect from Saucy to Trusty, in order to identify the offending commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

I have the same issue on a Dell inspiron 1525. If you would like any hardware/system data, just let me know.

eltimbalino, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

The bug is still present in the updated kernel 3.13.0-27-generic. Mainline kernel 3.12.20-031220-generic works without problems. But it's a bit uncomfortable and unsecure to update the mainline kernel manually, so I hope the bug will be fixed soon.

Carsten Wehmeier, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, please just make a comment to this.

Has this bug been reported on the kernel.org's/freedesktop.org's bugzilla at all? Since it exists in mainline builds it's an upstream bug.

Žygimantas Beručka, this wouldn't be considered an upstream bug at this point as the latest or supported upstream kernel (3.15-rc7) hasn't been tested against suspend as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315435/comments/4 . As well, kernel.org bugzilla is legacy, and not a preferred contact point for upstream developers.

Could I consider this bug as a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1331654 ?

A bug report on kernel.org was done by Žygimantas Beručka (zygis) under https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78381 after a bisect that I did.
