Bug Description

Hello,

My HP Compaq Presario CQ70 a very old portable computer notebook have been having black screens some sessions after being used from Precise to Saucy.

Yesterday I just had Precise being installed. But this morning black screen. And also a very weird part to explain. You might believe in the weird part or not but I say as it is since it occured already twice and I used pc twice today.

lsb_release -c -d && uname -s -r && lspci | grep -i VGA
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
Codename: precise
Linux 3.11.0-18-generic
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

sudo dpkg -s gnome-power-manager
Package: gnome-power-manager
Status: purge ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: gnome
Installed-Size: 1584
Maintainer: Ubuntu Developers <email address hidden>
Architecture: i386
Version: 3.4.0-0ubuntu1.1
etc.

Last lost of Precise this morning:
- Even thought I had tooken out big battery (material) some years ago from my pc, this morning he made some noise alone, without being on electricity power and without battery, not being other PC at home (I checked they were off), true noise when my PC is working, so I deduced my old PC had become photo-voltaïc like solar panels, it tryed to turn on alone with morning sun light.
- Then when I put electricity on, it tryed alone to login Ubuntu with laptop closed. I heard Ubuntu welcome noise sound, so I opened laptop. I did not touch on/off button. Then what I saw was white mouse on black screen. Deduction: Xorg crashed.
- Then when I pulled OFF button to shut him up, then re-start, he restarted on black screen in silence, except for the internal noise. No Ubuntu welcome noise.
- Then when I took out electricity cable to restart it (since it thinks one method is the other one), it restarted (without the ON button) on the black screen in silence (except for usual internal noise).
- Then I restarted it and I re-installed Precise from USB in blind because I have external monitor/screen/display so I had to memorize BIOS in a blind way, since it doesn't appears in external monitor.
- More info: I had put xdiagnose at beginning, and none of the time he did the internal noise before black screen, he did put xdiagnose output on screen before BIOS question that I can't see. Before he did put just at start xdiagnose.

Result: He only support a few sessions before going black screen.
Conclusion: He mistakes ON / OFF / SLEEP / WORK

Than I took some info. Even downloaded it, but couldn't put it on external USB. So I have it in my e-mail, all ancient logs of errors or not. And also posted some: Precise while not OK, and Precise in USB new. I'll post you later.

So this morning, after Precise beeing installed. Noticed again, when came back to living room. Noice, but very very low and no battery and no electricity. If my living room was little more noisy, I wouldn't have noticed. PC is off, no electricity, no battery and yet, very very low 3 noise types:
- the continuous noise
- two times a noise at right (Enter and numbers side)
- once a noise at left, the one when we got PC ON
- no lights
All almost not audible, very very low. Could be my memory neurones that memorized thoses noises or my PC had become photo-voltaïc ? PC is old so could also be material problems.

So now for bug analysis, data you undersatand.
Joined log.tar.gz so you can see errors.

Only seen error that has to do with you, also present in this brand new Precise is:

Precise crashed again in a way I've never seen before. Did before crashing:
ALT+CTRL+F1
sudo service service lightdm stop
sudo X -configure
sudo Xorg -configure
sudo cp ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo service lightdm start

Said Compiz crashed. Couldn't send error because I wanted to get out.
Then noticed display was on internal screen size, tryed to put it back to external monitor screen but did not work, not even when starting gnome-control-center with sudo. PS: After installing, had let display on boths screens and before going in lightdm, display was good size in external monitor.

Then I reboot, then black screen.

Never had that before. Before had only black screen and no display error.

On Lucid live CD, installing Lucid to see if it will crashes also.

As I had said this one bug has got nothing to do with all other time Precise screen went black.

I did not install neither re-install neither re-configure nothing, I just did as I said up. I think PC was going to change the way of viewing power supply because in first reboot I could press button ON. But then I did not have time. So I stopped electricity. But then I said to myself, no, better reboot. So when I turned on electricity, no button to press again. And then white screen then black screen on external monitor, so not same problem at all then first.

It is the second log package I send you and it illustrates comments just up.

Thank you.

I went back to Lucid but couldn't stay on because no more supported. Furthermore I installed lightdm on it as explained on author's blog, and after rebooting xorg finished as before last Precise: white mouse on black screen.

Not touching lightdm anymore since not compatible with no Ubuntu.

Buttons ON/OFF did work well, but did not tryed lshw although I have log files if you want (except for xorg wich wasn't generated).

Now on Precise ON/OFF buttons do not work. Opened PC, it entered without the BIOS "black" waiting screen directely inside Ubuntu. Very weird not to have to wait neither to press any button, and yet it was no electricity before. (I opened laptop and pressed button, but while I pressed saw was already in Ubuntu so had no need to press whatsoever and button did not do anything at start). In this Precise I had choosen password to enter at beginning, not in last Precises.

Going to try passing into Trusty to see if more stable then Precise in what concern buttons. Although have read Trusty is still a beta version but not for long, 3days.

Finally I'm staying on Precise.

I think choosing option to ask password at beginning, before entering in Ubuntu did the trick.

Now buttons are working fine although now we pass from Edid Check Sum to Ubuntu login Screen without BIOS waiting screen. ON/OFF works. Electricity does not grab ON/OFF attributes no more. Going to see if SLEEP (sceen saver) works ?

Yes SUSPEND (= sleep) button and screensavers does work fine now.

I think it messed everything up because it wanted to go fast into Ubuntu so it did not watch if I was putting electricity on or button on. But with a password for 1st login, password do stop this mess, and buttons and electricity don't have other option then working fine. (my explanation for black screen)

I won't touch xorg neither lightdm although problem did exist before me touching them, that's way I had touched them.

Hope no black screen further.

Thank you.

Have copied from Nautilus all of the .conf from previous Precise. Will send to you later. A lot of errors while copying because duplicate or link error.

Is thinking about installing again PPA glasen to have Intel driver on like some years ago.

(I won't post it but I have it.)

Right now I am testing everything. Really everything:
On my blog: http://memubuntu.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/intel-black-screen-old-laptop/

Related to this subject is (but there are much more errors wich could do the black screen):
"

On va essayer celui-là:
sudo apt-get install gconf-editor
sudo gconf-editor

brightness_ac *Sur courant alternatif, valeurs de 0 à 100.
brightness_dim_battery *Sur batterie, valeurs de 0 à 100.
idle_brightness *Lorsque inactif, généralement 30.

ls /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/

cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness

cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness

cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/type

sudo nano /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

(this last one is important for it will change all above)

Rem: Ces suggestions sont là: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/backlight

Ah, luminosité et verrouillage ça a changé.

Ps: pas toucher à bl_power, où apparemment backlight on c'est 0 et off c'est 1.

Hello, yes I had put back battery that I had taken out 3years ago.

But each time, from 10 last times, I turn computer on, 1st time it turns on: black screen, 2nd time I turn it on: it works but sometimes with /tmp error (The disk drive for /tmp is not ready). So perhaps my problem could be PC dying ?

All I did till now is in my blog: intel ppa glasen + a lot of changing. http://memubuntu.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/intel-black-screen-old-laptop/

............ I forgot to install or xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal or xserver-xorg-video-intel from Glasen PPA. I thought installing the PPA was enough. And I'll uninstall xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-saucy.

I have power manager: gnome-power-manager 3.4.0-0ubuntu1.1 , t

I'll install xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal although I think xserver-xorg-video-intel is more compatible, but Precise is definitely -lts.

Today black screen but could connect: touched all the echap F1-F12, everything, and CTRL+everything and Fn+everything and ALT+everything and Windows button+everything, then typed ENTER and I logged in from black screen into Precise !!!

So I can send you more info, since, my black screen doesn't speak and since I just had it !!!!!!!!!

There you can analyse it and tell me why Ubuntu stopped? Right now my install is equal to my blog's with exterior intel Glasen driver for it to work. Was it Ubuntu or material ? http://memubuntu.wordpress.com/2014/04/05/intel-black-screen-old-laptop-version-2-precise/
