Just installed the firmware update. Now dock shows firmware version 2.17.
Firmware update utility required Intel display-driver installed on my Windows 8.1 installation, otherwise it was unable to update to detect the DP-hub.

Now reinstalling Linux. I am going to report back in a few minutes.
