You might be able to WORKAROUND the dimming+freeze issue by disabling screen dim in System Settings (which may have it's own systemd WORKAROUND to get these to take). I'll let you comment further to this.

If you patch the default Ubuntu kernel with out of tree branches, especially an experimental testing ground like drm-intel-next, it's not supported. Also, did this issue not occur for you personally in a release prior to Trusty?
