Bug Description

After doing an update to Ubuntu 13.04, the laptop wwould go thru the motions of shutting down but would NOT complete the shutdown. The drive light continues to flicker and the 2 status lights on the front of the laptop remain lit. I tried to correct this issue by installing Ubuntu 13.10 from a DVD over the existing Ubuntu 13.04. This was before I saw all the problems showing up with the release. It installed but had some options that had to be corrected. The machine still will not after getting several updates since. This machine is set up as a dual-boot with Windows Vista. The Windows side shutsdown without any issues. This shutdown problem affects the lptop and not my Zotac desktop machine. It appears to be a problem in the shutdown of laptops and not desktop machines.

The only way I can shut it down or reboot the machine is to HARD Shutdown the machine and then press the POWER button to start it back up.

I was intending to rebuild the machine as just an Ubuntu machine but I won't until it can shutdown cleanly.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.11 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".
