I notice that one other person is using a KVM switch. The problem is intermittent for me but I realize now that it began just after adding a linksys KVM switch (connected through PS2) setup and have just found that I can usually stop the problem by removing the KVM and going direct. Of course this is very inconvenient but at least it's usable...

I am using 8.04 without any visual effects enabled.
