I never had a freeze, when suspending with the commands "sudo pm-suspend", "sudo pm-hibernate" or "sudo pm-suspend-hybrid".
Maybe it is related with X and with screen locks. Could explain why it takes a few seconds after wakeup until freeze. (I am free of fglrx for a while now and reinstalled the critical mesa packages. 3D games like 0AD and Minecraft work.)
@Flittermice: Can you give a description of your hardware platform?
